1. Conductors
Aluminum (AAAC or ACSR) :
Aluminum is the most common material used for overhead conductors due to its low cost, lightweight, and high conductivity. However, it’s not as strong as copper, so it’s often used in combination with steel for added strength.
ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) : ACSR conductors combine aluminum and steel, with the aluminum providing good conductivity and the steel providing strength.
AAAC (All Aluminum Alloy Conductor): AAAC uses an aluminum alloy for increased strength, making it more resistant to corrosion and ideal for harsher environments.
Copper :
Copper was historically used in overhead conductors due to its excellent conductivity, but it’s heavier and more expensive than aluminum. It is still used in some cases, particularly for smaller transmission lines.
All Aluminum Conductor (AAC) :
AAC conductors consist of aluminum wire and are commonly used for short spans and areas with low corrosion.
2. Insulators
Porcelain :
Porcelain is a traditional material used in insulators for overhead lines. It's known for its durability and resistance to electrical discharge but can be heavy and fragile.
Glass :
Glass insulators are often used for their high electrical insulating properties and resistance to environmental conditions. However, they can also be brittle.
Polymer :
Polymer insulators, made from synthetic materials like rubber, are increasingly used because they are lightweight, more resistant to environmental damage, and do not suffer from the same breakage risks as porcelain or glass.
3. Support Structures (Poles and Towers)
Wood :
Wooden poles are still widely used for distribution lines, especially in rural areas, because of their lower initial cost and ease of installation.
Steel :
Steel is commonly used for transmission towers due to its high strength and ability to withstand heavy loads and environmental stresses. It is more durable but has a higher initial cost compared to wood.
Concrete :
Concrete poles are used in some regions due to their durability and fire-resistant properties, although they are more difficult to install and are heavy.
4. Ground Wire (Earth Wire)
Galvanized Steel :
Steel wires are often used for the ground wire to protect against lightning strikes and other electrical faults. The wire is coated with zinc to prevent rusting.
Aluminum :
In some cases, aluminum is used for the ground wire due to its light weight and corrosion resistance.
5. Clamps and Connectors
Copper :
Copper clamps and connectors are often used for their superior conductivity and corrosion resistance.
Aluminum :
Aluminum is commonly used for clamps and connectors, particularly in areas where weight is a concern.
